Parts of Shrewsbury’s Christmas Cracker festivities will be broadcast live around town by audio feed for the first time in its history.
The celebrations, which take place on Wednesday [18 NOV], mark the start of late night shopping and the launch of the Christmas lights display.
Shrewsbury based company, Microvideo, will be relaying audio from the countdown in the town’s Square to pride Hill, outside the Darwin Shopping Centre and St Alkmund’s Square where Eat Street will also be taking place.
Microvideo will also be providing a live online broadcast from the town’s Carols in the Square concert on December 16, as well as running a live video feed into the Market Hall.
Charles Denscombe, from Microvideo said: “Because of the unique, historic lay-out of Shrewsbury Town Centre, and the very limited space for large crowds, we are going to relay the events from the Square to Pride Hill and to the St Alkmund’s area.
This has been a technical challenge but I can see technology being used creatively in the future so that larger numbers of people can enjoy the events in the town.”
The switch-on is organised by Shrewsbury Town Council in partnership with Shrewsbury Shopping Centres and Shropshire Council and is sponsored by Shrewsbury BID.
The excitement kicks off from 5pm, with the countdown and switch-on at 6.30pm. A full programme will be available on the night, or to download a copy in advance visit www.shrewsburytowncouncil.gov.uk or www.originalshrewsbury.co.uk
Suzi Wilkinson, Marketing & Promotions Officer for Shrewsbury Town Council said: “We are thrilled to be working with local company Microvideo. The live broadcast will allow people to gather in other parts of town, not just the Square, whilst still being able to experience the excitement of the countdown and switch-on.
“With free entertainment and free parking in selected car parks from 4pm Shrewsbury’s Christmas Cracker is set to be a real cracker of an event so come along and help kick start the festive season with a bang!”
