Shrewsbury Town Council has supported a local initiative to get more people using bicycles as a sustainable form of transport with the award of a grant for £3,000.
At a recent meeting of the Council’s Finance and General Purposes Committee, Councillors agreed to provide a grant to help Shropshire Cycle Hub continue with their work renovating bicycles in Shrewsbury.
Councillor Alan Mosley, chairman of the Finance Committee, said: “This is a great project which is gaining a lot of support within the town and we are delighted to be able to support the Shropshire Cycle Hub with this grant.
“Helping people to become more active and reduce unnecessary car journeys within the town forms part of our aims within the Big Town Plan and will also help reduce our collective carbon footprint by using a more sustainable mode of transport. This is one of our key objectives within our Climate Change Emergency Action Plan.”
The Shropshire Cycle Hub will also provide two bicycles to the Youth Services of the Town Council to enable their Youth Workers engage more freely with young people whilst the weekly sessions are closed during Lockdown.
Mark Fermor, founder of Shropshire Cycle Hub, said: “It is a tremendous boost to the work we are doing to support our local community and we thank Shrewsbury Town Council for their continued support.
“This grant will enable us to provide more bicycles to those people who can’t afford to buy a new one whilst also helping people become fitter by cycling for those short journeys around town instead of using their car.”
