The unsung community heroes of Shrewsbury have been officially recognised by the Mayor for playing their part in helping to make the town a special place to live, work and visit.
The Mayor’s Awards scheme is Shrewsbury’s equivalent of “The Oscars”, with local individuals, organisations, groups and businesses being recognised for their achievements, for the benefit of the whole town.
The event saw 51 of the town’s most dedicated citizens and organisations receiving honours from the Mayor of Shrewsbury at this year’s Mayor’s Awards ceremony, which took place at the Guildhall this evening. [WEDS]
The overall winners in each category were: – Business – Shrewsbury Market Hall; Built Heritage – Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings; Community – Polish Centre c.i.c.; Courtesy – Lorraine Fletcher; Environment – Shrewsbury Litter Action Project; Tourism – Theatre Severn; and Youth – Smash Life.
With a record number of votes cast in this year’s Market Trader of the Year category, the Town Clerk revealed the winners at the event. With all the votes counted, and in true election style, The Card Store was declared the winner with a tight contest between second and third places with Ewe & Ply in second and Café AleOli in third place.
The Mayor also presented seven personal awards to individuals and organisations he has met throughout his mayoral year that he felt had made a significant contribution to the town. Certificates were presented to Ian Pritchard, Ryan Jervis, Judith and Stephen Williams, Morris & Company, Keith Jones, Tony Bywater and Sir Algernon Heber-Percy.
The Mayor of Shrewsbury said: “This annual event is the town’s opportunity to thank those people who give up so much of their time to make Shrewsbury the great place that it is for everyone.
“With such a fantastic range of local people and organisations who do so much for the benefit of the town and its residents, it is a great privilege to be able to recognize and reward those who are so generous in giving their time for others.
“I hope that this evening will provide encouragement for others to help out in their local community.”
