Shrewsbury’s Quarry park has been included in a list of 31 other parks in the West Midlands region to choose the UK’s Best Park for 2017.
The Grade II historic park, which also boasts the award-winning Dingle garden, has been nominated by members of the public as part of the Fields in Trust annual public vote to discover the nation’s favourite green space.
The 29-acre Quarry is the main recreational park in the town and is located within the loop of the River Severn. It is also home to the award-winning Darwin’s World of Adventure Splash park and children’s play area.
A real gem in the heart of the town, the park hosts numerous events throughout the year, including the annual Shrewsbury Flower Show, the longest running event of its kind in the world.
Helen Ball, town clerk for the Council, said: “We are extremely proud that Shrewsbury’s Quarry park has been nominated by members of the public in The Fields in Trust UK’s Best Park Award. It is great to see that the park means so much to the people of Shrewsbury and the importance they place on this valued open space in the heart of the town.
“We are up against some tough opposition and we would urge everyone to vote for Shrewsbury’s Quarry park at www.fieldsintrust.org/bestpark/westmidlands before the 5pm deadline on the closing date of Friday 3 November.”
Fields in Trust is a national charity that operates throughout the UK to safeguard recreational spaces and campaign for better statutory protection for all kinds of outdoor sites. The latest research from Fields in Trust shows, for the first time at national level, a direct and statistically significant link between public parks and green spaces and health and wellbeing. There is an established link between an individual’s use of parks and an improvement in their physical health, life satisfaction, sense of worth, happiness and anxiety levels.
